Cultural Diversity Is the Challenge to Project Management

The businesses today impart tremendous pressure, especially in the IT department. Implementation of project management strategy will help in curbing this pressure.

When project management is combined with strategic business objectives it can deliver several benefits, like restored focus on core business and the alleviation of risks by depending on an expert.

To ensure the success while implementing a project management strategy, some criteria’s are to be followed, be it for in-house project or outsourced project. One of the least discussed parts of the criteria is cultural diversity.

There are many resources utilised for project based work, and the most important as well one of the most unpredictable aspect of it is managing people.  Most of the undertakings and risks are measurable during project management, but human element remains the hardest one to manage. Success of the project depends on diversity of skills and leadership whereas dynamics and culture are just essential elements of it because globalisation has elevated cultural diversity to new heights.

Even minor cultural differences if left unchecked or underestimated can lead to resentment and bitterness amongst the team members and also hamper the quality of project. A good project manager can only able to manage and control the diversity in his/her team for the best of everyone involved.
Below are six suggestions which will help project managers to address and manage such diversity:

  1. Outline the diversity from the beginning of the project – study about the culture of the people and organisation with which you are planning to work and take this into account during your project outlining.
  2. Judge and be ready to adapt as the team or the environment changes
  3. Your management technique should be adjusted so as to suite each situation and accept the diversity which you yourself bring to the team.
  4. Promote relationship building, transparency and trust amongst the members
  5. Work on your communication methods and style so as to align it with the diversity in your team.
  6. Introduce a culture of interactivity and transmission of knowledge and skills

By implementing the above suggestions and taking into account the cultural diversity during project implementation, it becomes easy to execute proper project management methodologies; understanding the intent of the business by the team and formulation of specific cultural boundaries are the important factors which contribute towards success of the project, thus helping to sustain the time and budget obligations which are the essence of project management.
