Leadership and Management Theories are Explored During Seminar

A seminar on "Project Management and Project Leadership - Getting the balance right" was conducted by Doha, ESI International who is the world leader in Innovative Management and Business Skills training yesterday at the Diplomatic Club. The substantial presentation on the subject was given by Mike Lavery, a Senior Instructor at ESI.

This Seminar focused on the recent theories of management and leadership and discussed the success stories of well- known personalities as what made them exceptional in their fields. Different leadership styles adopted by seasoned leaders in different fields, like business, government, military etc also became a part of discussion. The different phases involved in a project and the management and leadership skills required for each phase was highlighted.

According to Lavery the study of leadership is not any more confined to simple trait theories rather it has became more complex, situational, transactional and transformational in nature. He clearly outlined the application of leadership and management skills for obtaining better project results.

Some interesting ideas were presented by participants during brainstorming session like one of the participant said "Management is of things while leadership is applied to people," and another participant was of the opinion that "a good leader can be a good manager but a good manager may not be a good leader."

According to Lavery a leader is the one who establishes direction, prompts people, inspires trust, encourages pro-activeness, challenges the status quo, sees people as dynamic and evolving, and innovates.

His point of emphasis was that "A good leader must be ready to make unpopular decisions".

The participants also received tips to be an exceptional project leader and manager.

The Seminar participants were lead to some of the leadership competent topics like leading change, setting direction, aligning people, communication, and negotiation by Lavery.

The event aided in giving inputs to Qatari’s about recent developments in leadership and management in the fast evolving corporate sector.
